The Institution of Structural Engineers welcomes the launch of Version 1 of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, (“the Standard”) the first cross industry framework to define what it means for buildings in the UK to be genuinely aligned with science based net zero carbon limits.

As a founding partner, we have supported the development of the Standard for more than four years, ensuring its aims reflect our commitment to equipping structural engineers with the tools to address the climate emergency.  Extensive industry piloting has shown the standard to be both robust and feasible.

The Standard is free to access, and provides a clear, science‑based methodology for demonstrating that buildings meet the UK’s carbon and energy budgets, replacing a landscape of inconsistent or misleading claims with a single, robust benchmark.
