The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including individuals with disabilities. We strive to continually improve the digital user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards.

Compliance status

Our website aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, as referenced by the European standard EN 301 549.

Measures to support accessibility

To ensure accessibility, IStructE has implemented the following measures:

  • Incorporated accessibility into our digital strategy and internal HR policies for our staff.
  • Conducted accessibility audits using tools such as axe DevTools and WAVE.

  • Engaged with our key web agency partners to guide improvements and provide expertise.

  • Provided training for our web development team on accessibility best practices such as ensuring photos / images use Alt Text.

  • Established an ongoing review process to monitor and enhance accessibility features.

Our roadmap

As of 28 June 2025, we have conducted an accessibility audit and worked with partners to assess our digital estate.

We acknowledge that some parts of the website may not yet fully comply with these standards. We have a roadmap in place to achieve full compliance under the EAA (ukaaf.org) within the next 12 months, for which the priorities are:

  • making PDF documents fully accessible to screen reader software.

  • ensuring that captioning and subtitling of video streams is available.

  • modifying the line height or spacing of text.

  • skipping to main content when using a screen reader.
