Annual grants supporting short-term projects that benefit earthquake disaster mitigation and post-disaster reconnaissance efforts

Research resented:

Improving operational use of satellite remote sensing for post-disaster damage assessment in Urban Search and Rescue contexts – Sivasakthy Selvakumaran, Cambridge University

Assessment of partially confined masonry school buildings in India and interventions for improved seismic performance – Ahsana Parammal Vatteri, UCL

This lecture was brought to you by the UK Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (www.eefit.org.uk) which is serviced by The Institution of Structural Engineers.

Speakers

Ahsana Parammal Vatteri is a research fellow on the UNESCO chair on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilient Engineering, at UCL. She completed her Ph.D. from the EPICentre research group, in the field of earthquake and multi-hazard engineering and the application of Bayesian Networks for system resilience. She focuses on confined masonry typology of buildings, especially schools and education infrastructure in the context of structural, functional and social resilience. Currently she is working on developing a multi-hazard resilience and decision-making framework for integrated school-road infrastructure in the Dominican Republic and the Philippines. She also engages in consultancy projects on seismic-safety assessment of schools, EEFIT reconnaissance missions, knowledge dissemination activities, teaching, and SECED Young Members Sub-Committee.

Sivasakthy Selvakumaran is a Chartered Engineer with varied international experience from supporting asset owners protect key transport infrastructure in the UK to designing and construction of civil infrastructure to post-earthquake damage assessment and reconstruction work in Peru. She then returned to academia to complete a PhD from the University of Cambridge which was based on combining structural engineering insights together with satellite image processing working with National Physical Laboratory and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). She has a multidisciplinary research group working on topics related to natural hazards and climate challenges. Sakthy is also an Engineer and USAR (Urban Search & Rescue) Technician for the organisation SARAID (Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters) who provide USAR emergency support following disasters as well as support local authorities with coordination for post-disaster damage assessment.
