Geoff Clifton describes the use of concrete as a major constituent of repair work performed on English cathedrals in the 20th century, but raises concerns about the long-term problems this use may result in.

Synopsis

This paper sets the scene by looking briefly at the failure of some historical repair methods in English cathedrals. It then reviews the repairs that have been carried out on a number of cathedrals in the 20th century, using concrete as a major constituent. Finally, based on our current knowledge of concrete and its reinforcement, the paper assesses the future of these repairs.
