The programme included full scale testing of a decommissioned metallic riveted railway bridge followed by static and fatigue testing carried out on full scale and small scale wrought iron and elderly steel bridge components and coupons extracted from the bridge.
An overview of results obtained from the analysis of calibrated finite element models of riveted U-frames towards fatigue risk prioritisation will also be presented.
Dr Boulent Imam - Associate Professor (Reader) in Civil Engineering
Dr Boulent Imam is an Associate Professor (Reader) at the school of sustainability, civil and environmental engineering in the University of Surrey and Programme Director for the MSc programmes in bridge engineering and infrastructure engineering and management.
His main area of expertise is the whole life performance assessment of bridges. He has extensively researched in the area of fatigue of metallic bridges with collaborations with national and european infrastructure owners and managers contributing towards the development of advanced methods for more reliable assessment of their remaining fatigue life.
Dr Imam’s research also encompasses assessment of the potential impacts of climate change on bridge deterioration and quantifying the resilience of bridge infrastructure against extreme events, including bridge scour and flooding.
